My career began at Rothstein Kass & Company in 1994 while I was still pursuing my degree in accounting at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I was hired as an intern in their IT group to handle all the capital allocations of their hedge fund clients. After becoming a hedge fund senior auditor, I moved to Grant Thornton to help lead efforts in establishing their hedge fund back office practice using what was then known as Shepro Braun's Total Return (now owned by SS&C).
After leaving Grant Thornton, I made my move to the buy side and joined my first hedge fund. In 1997, I joined Troubh Fund Management as a controller. Back then, funds were self administered and I handled everything including investor outreach/relations and self-made macro-driven monthly statements. I eventually became a Chief Financial Officer at the age of 27. I led the company from $10 million in AUM to $550 million in AUM through great performance by the manager and through my marketing efforts.
Talara Capital is my model launch. I left Holden Asset Management to join a former Tiger Cub PM and his partner launch Talara. We met over coffee in temporary offices all over the city from March 2010 to September 2010 until we finally gave ourselves the green light to launch. The principals and I spent a considerable amount of time fine-tuning the pitch book, the DDQ, operational presentations and worked tirelessly to enhance our success at raising capital. The principals checked all the boxes for what allocators find attractive in new managers. The three of us worked on sweat equity until we launched. When we launched on 1/1/11, we secured $130 million in capital on Day 1, eventually exceeding $250 million.
I often find myself gravitating toward start-ups. My entrepreneurial spirit makes me enthusiastic in creating funds from the ground up to help companies grow with a result-oriented mindset. I internalize all of my tasks and understand that effort translates to success. I have no problem with sweat equity and like to maintain a symbiotic relationship with my clients when I help them reach their goal, from which we can both take away significant benefits.
